Ice Breaker Activity – 10 mins
Love Food, Hate Waste
• Why is food waste a problem?
• Almost 2.2 million tonnes of edible food is wasted each year, costing Canadians in excess of $17 billion. Food and other organic material incorrectly put in garbage bins ends up in landfill where it decomposes and produces greenhouse gases, like methane.
• We buy too much, cook too much and don’t store it correctly.
• Getting food from farm to table, and then managing or disposing of food as waste, also has a significant carbon footprint – it contributes to Canada’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions!
• What have you learned about keeping food fresh?
• What is one way you can revive food?
Group activity:
• Spend 5 minutes reading through this website:
https://lovefoodhatewaste.ca/about/food-waste/
• Find one way to reduce your own food waste using the website
• Be prepared to briefly share it to the class
Bonus question: How does meal planning help reduce waste?
• Can you search for how a green leek and potato soup recipe helps reduce food waste?
